BATON ROUGE, La. - The Ole Miss Rebels scored in the last four minutes of the match to defeat Texas Tech 1-0 at the LSU Invitational Sunday.
The loss marked the fourth straight one-goal defeat for the Red Raiders (0-4-0), but head coach Felix Oskam felt good about the way his team played.
"We played fairly well. It's probably the best game we've played so far as a team, as a unit," Oskam said. "We were very organized. They just got one breakaway, and that was the difference."
Tech senior forward Carrie Graham and freshman Tracy Loyd were each named to the all-tournament team. Graham had one assist and took seven shots in two matches, while Loyd played solid in both matches of the tournament against LSU and Mississippi.
The coach said the match was very well-played by both teams, with each squad missing scoring opportunities throughout.
"It was like a heavyweight fight. We had some chances and they had some chances. We just have to take care of the opportunities we have a little better when we get a shot on goal.
"We didn't have a lot of chances today, but we need to be able to capitalize whenever we have the opportunity to put the ball in the back of the net."
Regan Scalon scored unassisted from the top of the 18-yard box in the 87th minute for the game's only tally. Tech keeper Brittney Peese made five saves during the match, all in the first half against the Rebels.
For the first time this season, the Red Raiders were outshot, 17-13, by Mississippi. The trio of Graham, Lindsey Wile and Ali Jepson combined to take 10 of Tech's 13 shots in the match.
Tech continues its season-opening six-game road trip with matches at Portland State and Portland this Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Red Raiders open the home slate on September 14 against West Texas A&M.
