THE COACHES
Texas Tech head coach James Dickey enters the game with a 163-110 record over 10 seasons in Lubbock. Dickey has led the Red Raiders to two NCAA and one NIT appearance during his tenure.
Kansas head coach Roy Williams is in his 13th season in Lawrence. Williams has a career mark of 329-82 at the school and has guided the Jayhawks to 11-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and two Final Fours.
THE RECORDS
The Red Raiders enter the game with a 6-5 mark after wrapping up non-conference play Tuesday night with a 71-65 win over New Mexico State at the United Spirit Arena.
Kansas is 11-1 on the season with its lone loss coming at Wake Forest. The Jayhawks ended their non-conference season with a win over Southwest Missouri State last Saturday night.
TECH HOPING FOR REPEAT OF LAST KANSAS APPEARANCE IN LUBBOCK
The last time Kansas visited Lubbock, the Red Raiders surprised the nationally-ranked Jayhawks with a 90-84 win at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Tech guard Rayford Young put on an unforgettable performance in the final eight minutes of the game. Young went on a 32-point scoring barrage, including a prefect 18-of-18 performance from the foul line, to single-handedly give Texas Tech its first win over the Jayhawks.
TEXAS TECH IN BIG 12 OPENERS
The Red Raiders are 3-1 all-time in league openers since the Big 12's first season in 1996. Texas Tech won its first three conference openers, before dropping last season's opener at Oklahoma State.
KANSAS LEADS ALL-TIME SERIES
The Jayhawks hold a 10-1 advantage over the Red Raiders in the all-time series between the two teams. The schools met on the hardwood in the initial game of series in 1959. Kansas won that game and went on to win nine straight, before Tech's win in Lubbock two years ago. The Jayhawks knocked off the Red Raiders 87-62 last season in Lawrence.
RED RAIDER STATS VS. KANSAS
Six current Red Raiders have faced the Jayhawks at least once during their careers at Texas Tech. Cliff Owens and Johnny Phillips have played in three meetings with Kansas, while Andy Ellis, Ronald Hobbs, Jayson Mitchell and Chris Cassidy have played in one game. Ellis scored 12 points in his lone meeting against Kansas in Lubbock two years ago, while Hobbs added nine. Owens and Phillips are averaging 5.0 and 2.0 points per game, respectively. Mitchell had two points a year ago.
LEADING THE JAYHAWKS
Five Jayhawks are averaging in double figures for a team posting 84.3 points per game. Kenny Gregory leads the team with 17.2 points, while Drew Gooden (15.8), Nick Collison (13.0), Eric Chenowith (12.0) and Kirk Hinrich (10.5) follow. Chenowith leads the team on the boards with 9.3 rebounds per game.
THE LAST TIME VS. KANSAS
Four Kansas players scored in double figures, while the KU defense held Texas Tech to 36.1 shooting from the floor as the Jayhawks cruised to an 87-62 win at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence.
Rayford Young and Brodney Kennard scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the Red Raiders, which dropped below .500 for the first time during the season.
Kansas, which shot 48.5 percent from the field, was led by Kenny Gregory's 19 points. Drew Gooden and Jeff Boschee added 14 and 13 points, while Nick Bradford hit 10.
TEXAS TECH ENTERS BIG 12 SEASON FOLLOWING WIN OVER NEW MEXICO ST.
Texas Tech scored the final six points of the game to break a 65-65 tie and escape with a 71-65 win over New Mexico State in the final non-conference game of the season Tuesday night.
NMSU's Eric Channing nailed a two-point basket with 1:39 to play, capping a 14-4 run by the Aggies over a seven-minute stretch. Following a Tech timeout, Marcus Shropshire connected on his third three-point basket of the game with 1:19 to play to give Tech a three-point lead. Free throws by Andy Ellis and Jamal Brown over the final 30 seconds sealed the win for the Red Raiders.
Ellis led Texas Tech with 20 points followed by Shropshire's 15. Jayson Mitchell and Cliff Owens added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Channing led all scorers with 22 points.
NOTING THE WIN OVER NEW MEXICO ST.
- Texas Tech improved to 6-5 on the season and completed non-conference play with the win.
- Texas Tech shot 51.9 percent from the field, marking the second time this season the Red Raiders have eclipsed the 50 percent mark.
- Freshman Marcus Shropshire tied his career high with 15 points. Shropshire connected on 5-of-10 baskets, including three three-point buckets. Shropshire has hit nine threes in the last three games.
- The Red Raiders went on an 11-2 run midway through the second half to take a 10-point lead with 8:31 remaining. The Tech defense, however, yielded a 14-4 run over the next seven minutes, allowing the Aggies to tie the game with 1:39 to play.
- Senior forward Cliff Owens' status was questionable entering the game Tuesday night, but the Tech forward started his 11th game of the season and scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebound. Owens suffered a concussion in practice last Saturday and was still feeling the effects as late as Monday morning.
- Head coach James Dickey used his fourth different starting lineup of the season. Shropshire got his first start of the season in place of Ronald Hobbs, while Mikey Marshall was starting in his second game for Jayson Mitchell. Owens, Ellis and Brown have started in each game this season.
LEADING THE RED RAIDERS
Andy Ellis leads Texas Tech with 17.2 points per game, followed by Cliff Owens' 13.9 points. Jamal Brown rounds out the double-figure scoring with 10.4 points. Owens is the man on the boards for the Red Raiders with 7.4 rebounds per game, while Ellis is averaging 6.5. Brown averages 7.8 assists to lead Tech.
JUNIOR CLASS LEADING THE WAY
Andy Ellis and Jamal Brown have combined this season for 27.4 points per game to lead the Red Raiders. Cliff Owens is leading a senior contingent which is scoring 24.5 points per game, while the freshman class follows with 21.0 points. Ronald Hobbs is the lone sophomore averaging 6.5 points per game.
GETTING THE GREEn LIGHT
Freshman point guard Marcus Shropshire has connected on nine three-point attempts in the last three games. He was perfect on all three attempts from the arc against Oral Roberts and went 3-of-7 against TCU and New Mexico State. Shropshire has 14 made threes this season, trailing Jamal Brown's 15 extra-point baskets. Shropshire does lead the team with a 43.8 percent success rate from three.
WINNING THE BOARD GAME
Texas Tech is 6-2 when out-rebounding the opposition and 0-3 when allowing opponents the upper hand on the glass.
FRONTCOURT LEADING RED RAIDERS
Andy Ellis and Cliff Owens have combined to average 31.1 points per game on the season. Ellis is the team leader with 17.2 points per game, while Owens is second with 13.9 points.
STRUGGLING In THE '80s
Six times during the 2000-01 season, the Red Raiders have allowed opponents to score more than 80 points, with five of those games going down in the loss column for the Red Raiders. Tech is 1-5 in games when the opposition scores 80 or more, while the team is 5-0 when holding opponents under 80.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE EPIDEMIC
Three Red Raiders have recorded double-doubles this season. Cliff Owens leads with four, while point guard Jamal Brown has three double-doubles on the season. Andy Ellis follows with two.
GOTTA PLAY DEFENSE
Texas Tech is averaging 77.2 points per game, but is yielding 76.2 per outing. The Red Raiders are 4-0 when holding opponents under 70 points, but 2-5 when allowing 70 or more.
BROWn In A GIVING MOOD
Point guard Jamal Brown leads the Big 12 with 7.7 assists per game and is on pace to shatter the Tech single-season assists record. If Brown keeps his current pace, he will finish the regular season with 208 assists. Jason Martin (1995-96) holds the single-season record at Texas Tech with 182.
FIRST-HALF WOES
Texas Tech is 1-4 when trailing at halftime. The lone win came at Oral Roberts after the Red Raiders erased a 10-point halftime deficit in an overtime win.
THE DIFFERENCE IS AT THE LINE
Tech's performance at the free throw line this season has factored in as the difference in two games. Tech missed 11 free throws in each game against UTEP and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tech dropped the UTEP game 81-80 and fell to the Islanders 86-80.
TECH OPPONENTS FARE WELL In POLLS
Four Red Raider opponents are ranked in the Associated Press poll, while three others are receiving votes. Kansas (7th), Oklahoma (15th), Iowa State (23rd) and Texas (24th) are in the top 25 and Missouri, Oklahoma State and Baylor are receiving votes. In the ESPN/USA Today poll, Kansas (7th), Oklahoma (16th) and Texas (22nd) are among the top 25, while Iowa State, Missouri and Oklahoma State are receiving votes.
ELLIS NAMED TO PRESEASOn TEAMS
Texas Tech junior center Andy Ellis has been tabbed by three college basketball publications as a preseason All-Big 12 selection.
Ellis is listed as a second-team All-Big 12 selection by The Sporting News and Athlon Sports. Street and Smith's has Ellis listed as an All-Big 12 selection along with Jamaal Tinsley (Iowa State), Kimani Ffriend (Nebraska), Drew Gooden (Kansas) and Bernard King (Texas A&M).
Ellis averaged 16.9 points per game and 8.9 rebounds during the 1999-00 season before dislocating his left shoulder against Nebraska in the 14th game of the season that forced him to sit out the remainder of the year.
