LAST WEEK FOR TEXAS TECH AND STEPHEN F. AUSTIN
Texas Tech dropped a 30-13 decision to fourth-ranked Oklahoma in Lubbock last weekend, snapping the Red Raiders' three-game Big 12 winning streak. Stephen F. Austin fell 31-17 at No. 16 (I-AA) Northwestern (La.) State.
THE TEXAS TECH-STEPHEN F. AUSTIN SERIES
This is the first meeting between the two schools.
RED RAIDER NOTEBOOK VS. OKLAHOMA
- QB Kliff Kingsbury threw his first interception in 131 pass attempts on the opening drive of the game. Kingsbury's last interception came in the second quarter against Baylor on Oct. 27.
- Junior PK Robert Treece tied his career mark with a 42-yard field goal in the first quarter. Treece nailed a 42-yarder earlier in the season against Nebraska.
- Junior DE Aaron Hunt picked up his 24th career sack in the second quarter and his 25th in the third. He is .5 sacks away from tying Montae Reagor's career record of 25.5 sacks which is the most in school history.
- Senior RB Ricky Williams picked up his longest receiving touchdown of the season in the second quarter, a 40-yard strike from Kliff Kingsbury. Williams now has three receiving touchdowns this season.
- Ricky Williams is now the all-time single-season pass reception leader with 88 career recptions.
- Junior CB Ricky Sailor picked up his first career interception in the third quarter. Sailor intercepted Nate Hybl in the endzone preventing an Oklahoma score. Sailor tallied his second interception of the game and his career late in the third quarter.
SAILOR HAS CAREER DAY
Junior CB Ricky Sailor turned in his top performance of the season with a two-interception day against Oklahoma. Sailor also made five tackles. He joins Kevin Curtis and Ryan Aycock as the only Red Raiders this season to snag two picks in a game.
WILLIAMS JOINS ELITE COMPANY
RB Ricky Williams eclipsed the 1,000-yard career receiving mark at Oklahoma State and is only the second player in school history to rush and receive for more than 1,000 yards. Williams has 3,609 rushing yards in his career and 1,108 receiving yards. College Football Hall of Fame member Donny Anderson rushed for 2,280 yards and had 1,392 receiving yards from 1963-65.
SACK RECORD WITHIN REACH FOR HUNT
DE Aaron Hunt logged two more sacks against Oklahoma, inching him closer to all-time leader Montae Reagor. He trails Reagor by a half a sack. Hunt's 12 sacks this season is the single-season record at Tech.
PAPER OR PLASTIC?
The Red Raiders have made a habit of lurking around opponent's backfields. Tech has 37 sacks on the season. DE Aaron Hunt leads the team with 12 followed by FS Kevin Curtis, DT Rodney McKinney and DT Josh Page with four each.
CURTIS SECOND TO 400
FS Kevin Curtis has 414 career tackles and is only the second player in school history over the 400-mark. Unfortunately, with one regular-season game to go for the senior, he won't eclipse the school record of 480, set by Brad Hastings from 1983-86.
CURTIS NAMED FOOTBALL NEWS SEMIFINALIST
FS Kevin Curtis has been selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the Football News Defensive Player of the Year award, the publication announced today. Curtis is currently third on the team with 9
- tackles and is second with three interceptions. He also has seven tackles for loss and four sacks. Curtis is in second place all-time at Texas Tech with 41
- career tackles. His 10 career interceptions ranks sixth all-time. Joining Curtis on the semifinalist list are Alex Brown (Florida), Wendell Bryant (Wisconsin), Rocky Calmus (Oklahoma), Keyuo Craver (Nebraska), Levar Fisher (N.C. State), Larry Foote (Michigan), Dwight Freeney (Syracuse), E.J. Henderson (Maryland), Quentin Jammer (Texas), Julius Peppers (North Carolina), Edward Reed (Miami), Derek Ross (Ohio State), Robert Thomas (UCLA) and Roy Williams (Oklahoma).
KINGSBURY NAMED DAVEY O'BRIEN SEMIFINALIST
The Davey O'Brien Foundation named QB Kliff Kingsbury one of 12 semifinalists for the 2001 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback. The O'Brien Advisory Committee, composed of national sportswriters and commentators will vote again later this month. The National College Football Awards Association in a joint effort among college football award programs will announce three finalists Tue., Nov. 27. Kingsbury is the Big 12's top passer for the second-straight season, leading the league in passing yardage, completions and total offense. Tech's passing offense ranks sixth nationally. During his career at Texas Tech, Kingsbury has set numerous school records including career pass completions (712), career 300-yard passing games (9), career 400-yard passing games (4) and single-season passing yards (3,418 last season). Joining Kingsbury on the list of semifinalists are David Carr (Fresno State), Eric Crouch (Nebraska), Woodrow Dantzler (Clemson), Brandon Doman (BYU), Ken Dorsey (Miami), Jason Gesser (Washington State), Rex Grossman (Florida), Joey Harrington (Oregon), Eli Manning (Mississippi), Kurt Kittner (Illinois) and Chris Simms (Texas). The winner of the 2001 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award will be announced on the 2001 Home Depot College Football Awards Show Thur., Dec. 6. The show will air on ESPN live from the Atlantic Dance Hall on the BoardWalk at Disney, next to the Epcot Center in Orlando, Fla. The winner and two runners-up will be honored at the 25th Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner Feb. 18, 2002, at the Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Texas Tech used 11 different receivers against OSU with eight catching at least two passes. On the season, 13 different players have caught passes for the Red Raiders.
FIVE-GAME STRETCH OF 350-YARD GAMES SNAPPED
Tech's 247 yards of total offense against the Sooners was the lowest of the season and also snapped a six-game stretch of at least 350 yards of total offense.
DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
Even though he is in his second season, IR Wes Welker's performance at Texas Tech leaves one to wonder how he escaped the universities in his home state of Oklahoma. Welker took over punt return duties midway through last season and has been one of Tech's top offensive weapons. As a punt returner, Welker already ranks sixth at Tech with 59 career returns and sixth with 618 return yards. On the season, Welker ranks third on the team with 30 points and is second with 88.1 all-purpose yards per game. He added his third-career punt return for a touchdown against Nebraska, an 85-yard jaunt that ranks as the second-longest for an NU opponent. He also is third on the team this season with 46 catches and four touchdown receptions.
NO ENDZONE TOO DEEP FOR McCANN
KR Ivory McCann has shown no fear on the season when it comes to returning kicks out of the endzone. In the season opener and McCann's first collegiate game, he returned a kickoff from eight yards deep in the endzone for a touchdown against New Mexico. At OSU, McCann almost toed the line at the back of the endzone before returning the kick 59 yards to the OSU 41.
KINGSBURY RECORD WATCH
QB Kliff Kingsbury needs four touchdown passes to become the school's all-time touchdown passing leader with 49. He also needs 356 yards in the next game to break the mark of 3,437 yards he established last season.
KINGSBURY ADDS ANOTHER 400-YARD PERFORMANCE
QB Kliff Kingsbury set the school record with his third 400-yard passing game in his career against Kansas State and added his fourth at Oklahoma State. Kingsbury threw for 440 yards against the Cowboys.
ROBERTS FINDING NICHE IN SENIOR SEASON
Senior TE Cole Roberts is making the most of his senior season. He already has surpassed his career total of 12 catches coming into the season with 3
- this year. He also has 285 receiving yards and is one of the nation's top 10 receiving tight ends.
FRANCIS SOLID IN LAST FIVE GAMES
WR Carlos Francis was averaging three catches per game heading into the Nebraska game. Over the last five games, he is averaging 6.8 catches per game and 92.0 yards, including 169 at Nebraska. On the season, Francis is second on the team with 49 receptions for a team-high 681 yards and 13.9 yards per catch.
WALK-ON LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD
K Robert Treece has been a pleasant surprise for the Red Raiders this season. With no clear-cut frontrunner for the job during the preseason, Treece walked-on the first day of school and won the job. He is second on the team with 72 points and is a perfect 39-of-39 on extra points. He also is second on the single-season list with 39 extra point attempts and extra points made.
WILLIAMS BREAKS SINGLE-SEASON RECEIVING MARK
RB Ricky Williams - that's right, running back - set the single-season record for receptions with 82 this season.
MORE ON WILLIAMS...
Ricky also has a shot at the career all-purpose yard mark. He currently has 4,936 all-purpose yards in second place and trails record holder Donny Anderson by 220 yards.
RED RAIDERS DOMINATE FIRST-HALF SCORING
On the season, Texas Tech has outscored opponents 194-112 in the first half. However, the real damage has come in the second quarter. The Red Raiders have scored 126 points in the second frame, 5
- points more than the next highest quarter (72 in the fourth this year). Tech holds a 328-259 advantage in scoring over its opponents this season.
NOSTALGIC RUSHERS
Two of the great rushing stories, and, for that matter, pass receiving in the case of Texas Tech's Ricky Williams with a school-record 82 pass receptions in his first 10 games this fall, have been Williams and Nebraska's stalwart runner-passer QB Eric Crouch. "Eric Crouch probably would get my vote for the Heisman Trophy right now," said South Carolina's revered head coach Lou Holtz on a national radio program on Nov. 17. The Tech RB overcame a near career-ending knee injury in 1999 to enjoy a stellar senior season while Crouch has been a near "one-man band" for the Huskers' 11-0 edition with 953 yards rushing (with a Big 12-leading 16 rushing TDs, he needs 47 yards to join the 1,000-1,000 rushing-passing group for a season).
