LAST TIME VS. OKLAHOMA - 1/16/01
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Jamal Brown hit a 5-foot bank shot between two defenders with 1.5 seconds remaining to give Texas Tech a 60-59 victory over No. 22 Oklahoma on Tuesday night.
Brown patiently held the ball before finding a crease in Oklahoma's defense and dropping in the game-winner for the Red Raiders (8-7, 2-2 Big 12).
Oklahoma (12-4, 1-3) had taken a 59-58 lead with 29 seconds left on a driving 8-footer by guard Nolan Johnson.
The victory ended Texas Tech's 12-game losing streak to ranked teams. It was the Red Raiders' first win over a ranked opponent since they beat Kansas on Feb. 13, 1999.
Brown led the Raiders with 18 points, while Andy Ellis had 16 and Cliff Owens 12.
Johnson had 19 points for the Sooners, while Aaron McGhee finished with 16.
The Red Raiders led 57-50 with 5:04 remaining after Mikey Marshall made one of two free throws, but the Sooners came back.
McGhee connected on a 3-pointer with 4:45 left that cut Tech's lead to 57-53. After Owens made one free throw with 3:29 left for a 58-53 lead, Johnson hit four straight free throws, cutting the lead to 58-57 with 1:56 left.
The Raiders failed to score on their next two possessions as Ellis and Brown missed 3-pointers in the game's final 79 seconds.
The Red Raiders took advantage of OU's cold shooting in the first half and led 27-20 at halftime.
The Sooners roared out in the second half, outscoring the Raiders 13-4 over the first three minutes to take a 33-31 lead at the 17:22 mark.
Tech recovered, putting together a 14-5 run that was keyed by six points by Ellis to take 45-38 lead with 13:11 left.

THREE-GAME SKID IS FIRST SINCE FINAL THREE GAMES OF LAST SEASON
Texas Tech's current three-game losing skid is its first such drought since dropping the final three games of the 1999-00 season. Tech closed the season with losses to Iowa State, Colorado and Missouri in the Big 12 tourney.
SCORING, WINNING TRENDS
Texas Tech has won only one game when allowing 80 or more points, while losing eight of those contests. The only win was a 100-98 overtime victory at Oral Roberts. The Red Raiders are 7-1 when holding the opposition under 80 points. The lone loss came on the road at Oklahoma State.
BROWN RANKS AMONG TOP TEN
Point guard Jamal Brown is second in the Big 12 and seventh in the nation with 7.1 assists per game. Marist's Sean Kennedy is the nation's leader in assists with 9.6 per game, while Kansas' Kirk Hinrich leads the Big 12 and ranks fifth nationally with 7.4 assists per game. Brown has posted four double-digit assist games this season. He dished out 11 in each game against UL Lafayette and UTEP. Brown handed out 10 balls against Texas A&M-CC and 10 more at TCU. In addition to his assists totals, Brown has recorded three double-doubles this season.
ELLIS TURNING IN STRONG SEASON
Center Andy Ellis leads the team with 16 points per game and is second on the boards with 6.6 rebounds. Ellis ranks seventh in the Big 12 in scoring. OWENS ON THE GLASS
Throughout his career senior forward Cliff Owens has had a knack for crashing the boards and leading Texas Tech in rebounding. Owens led the Red Raiders with 7.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 1997-98 and paced the team again the following season with 7.0 boards per game. After sitting out last season with an ankle injury, Owens once again leads the team on the glass. He is currently averaging 7.4 rebounds and has led the team in 11 games. Four times he has garnered game-high honors.
PHILLIPS NEARING 100 CAREER GAMES
Senior center Johnny Phillips is fast approaching 100 career games at Texas Tech. Phillips leads the team with 99 career games played. Senior forward Cliff Owens follows with 95. Tony Benford is the all-time games played leader at Tech with 121 from 1982-86.
GETTING BETTER WITH AGE
Cliff Owens and Ronald Hobbs have improved as their careers have progressed. Here's a look at the progression of the two careers:
BENCH PRODUCTION
Texas Tech is receiving an added boost this season from the bench. Tech's nonstarters are averaging 19.8 points per game ? 25.7 percent of the team total. Last season, bench scoring averaged 11.2 points per game. The Red Raiders are 5-3 on the season when the Tech bench out-scores the opposition's bench.
TECH SUCCESSFUL WHEN LEADING LATE
Texas Tech is 6-2 when leading with five minutes remaining in the game. The first loss came to UTEP after Tech held a seven-point lead with five minutes to play. The Red Raiders led Missouri by two with five minutes to play, but dropped a two-point decision.
BIG 12 SATURDAYS NOT KIND TO TECH
Texas Tech has lost five-straight Saturday games, all Big 12 contests. The Red Raiders won their first three Saturday games of the season over UL Lafayette, Stephen F. Austin and Western Michigan. The last four, however, haven't come so easy -- (7) Kansas, at Oklahoma State, Colorado, at Missouri and at Baylor. Here's a breakdown of the last four weekend games:
TECH GETS FIRST WIN OVER RANKED OPPONENT IN TWO YEARS
Texas Tech's 60-59 win over No. 21 Oklahoma was the first for the Red Raiders over a ranked team since knocking off 24th-ranked Kansas 90-84 on Feb. 13, 1999. Both games were in Lubbock. The last time Tech defeated an opponent ranked higher than 21st was a 77-68 win over 11th-ranked New Mexico on Dec. 4, 1996. During that same season, the Red Raiders also defeated No. 21 Fresno State.
TECH'S STRUGGLES IN FINAL FIVE
The Red Raiders have had a problem in the final five minutes of games this season. The opposition is out-scoring Texas Tech 182-152 this season in the closing minutes. The Red Raiders led UTEP 71-64 with five minutes remaining, but lost 81-80 after yielding a 17-9 run. Tech led Oklahoma 57-50 with five minutes to play and narrowly escaped with a 60-59 win, while Missouri erased a minute two-point Red Raider lead in the closing minutes.
LEADING AT THE BREAK
Texas Tech is 6-1 on the season when leading at halftime. The lone loss came to UTEP after the Red Raiders entered the intermission period with a 46-39 advantage.
TEXAS TECH VS. THE BIG 12
Texas Tech is 202-221 all-time against members of the Big 12 Conference.
ELLIS NAMED TO PRESEASON TEAMS
Texas Tech junior center Andy Ellis has been tabbed by three college basketball publications as a preseason All-Big 12 selection.
Ellis is listed as a second-team All-Big 12 selection by The Sporting News and Athlon Sports. Street and Smith's has Ellis listed as an All-Big 12 selection along with Jamaal Tinsley (Iowa State), Kimani Ffriend (Nebraska), Drew Gooden (Kansas) and Bernard King (Texas A&M).
Ellis, who injured his hand last month, averaged 16.9 points per game and 8.9 rebounds during the 1999-00 season before dislocating his left shoulder against Nebraska in the 14th game of the season that forced him to sit out the remainder of the year.
