LINCOLN, Neb. - The 17th-ranked Nebraska Huskers scored three runs, one earned, in the bottom of the sixth to post a 3-1 victory over Texas Tech Sunday afternoon at the Husker Softball Complex.
Tech held a 1-0 lead heading to the sixth, but let it get away with an error and two hits from the Huskers.
The Red Raiders stranded a pair of runners in the first, and failed to score in the second after collecting two singles. But Shauna Briggs gave Tech a 1-0 lead in the third with a two-out solo blast that just cleared the wall in centerfield.
Britney Stolle led off the fifth inning with a double down the left field line, and eventually the Red Raiders had second and third with two outs in the frame. After fouling off six pitches with the count full, Briggs finally popped out to short, ending the threat and the inning.
The Huskers finally broke through in the sixth when Peaches James looped a single just inside the right field line, breaking up the no-hitter and the perfect game for Tech starter Amanda Renfro. James stole second and went to third on an infield single by Cindy Roethemeyer, putting runners on the corners with one out.
Jamie Suhr was walked intentionally to load the bases, and Kim Ogee plated James with the tying run on a sacrifice fly to left. Nicole Trimboli then hit a fly ball to left center, and Sandy Butler and Eva Harshman ran into each other, dropping the ball and allowing Roethemeyer and Suhr to score and Nebraska to take the lead, 3-1.
Tech hosts Oklahoma City University Tuesday in a doubleheader at 2 & 4 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field on the Tech campus. The Red Raiders continue conference play next weekend with single games on Saturday and Sunday at home at 1 p.m. against the Kansas Jayhawks.
