LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech got strong pitching from senior Amanda Renfro and a pair of home runs from Carmen Grindell in splitting a doubleheader with the Oklahoma City Stars Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Johnson field on the Tech campus. Tech won the opening game, 5-0, before dropping the second contest, 5-3.
In the opening game, Grindell blasted a pair of home runs and Shauna Briggs added another round-tripper as Tech (25-15) cruised to a 5-0 victory.
Grindell gave the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo blast. Briggs and Grindell then had back-to-back solo shots in the fourth for a 3-0 Tech advantage.
Rebecca Eimen led off the fifth with a single and scored on a groundout by Briggs. The final tally of the contest came in the sixth when Eva Harshman doubled to left center and scored on a single to left from Eimen.
Renfro (22-12) picked up the win for Tech, going the distance and striking out 13. Renfro carried a perfect game into the seventh before Kayla Garroutte singled to left to start the frame. Lindsey Voss (12-4) suffered the loss for the Stars, allowing three earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
In the second contest, the Stars got two in the first and three in the third off Tech starter Maggie Ayres to post the 5-3 victory.
In the first Jessica Oleson singled and Stephanie Grange reached on an error before Heather Martin's RBI single plated Oleson with the first run of the contest. Katy Letts then singled off the leg of Ayres and into right field, scoring Grange for the early 2-0 advantage for OCU.
The Red Raiders came back in their half of the first with an RBI double to right center from Grindell, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
OCU added three more runs in the third on five hits, as well as a pair of Tech errors. Oleson and Grange both singled, and Oleson scored on a Martin single to right. Martin later scored on a double to left center by Kami Brokaw, staking the Stars to a 5-1 lead.
Tech's Sandy Butler singled to left to start the third, went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Eva Harshman, and scored on a two-out single to left from Grindell.
The Red Raiders mounted a comeback in the seventh, still trailing 5-2. Andrea Joachims doubled off the top of the wall in centerfield, and Butler followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners.
Harshman then doubled down the left field line to score pinch-runner Eimen, and Butler advanced to third. But Briggs and Grindell both grounded out to end the threat and the contest, as Tech stranded a pair of runners.
Alex Boily (9-3) started the game and came in to get the final two outs, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Ayres (3-3) took the loss for Tech, giving up five runs, three earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts.
The Red Raiders host Kansas this weekend at Rocky Johnson Field, with game time set for 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
