Texas Tech Wins Home Opener, 3-0 Over TCU

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team kicked-off the 2001 home season in perfect fashion as the Red Raiders dropped in-state rival TCU 30-19, 30-25, 30-22 in front of 706 fans at the United Spirit Arena on Tuesday night.
With the win, Texas Tech improves to 2-2 on the young season while TCU drops to 0-4 overall. The win gives Texas Tech an overall record of 23-3 in home openers dating back to 1975.
Texas Tech and TCU battled closely for most of the first-game before Texas Tech went on a 7-0 scoring run to give the Red Raiders a 30-19 win. Texas Tech took control in the middle of the second game and used an outstanding performance from senior Heather Hughes-Justice to earn a 30-25 win.
The Red Raiders finished off TCU in the third-game thanks to impressive hitting by freshman Kelly Johnson. Texas Tech was able to seal the match with a 30-23 win.
Kelly Johnson pounded out 14 kills and tallied 11 digs to lead all Texas Tech hitters while Heather Hughes-Justice was close behind with 13 kills and six digs. The Horned Frogs were led by Marci King's 12 kills and five digs.
Texas Tech will return to action this weekend at 1 p.m. against Stephen F. Austin in the Four Points Sheraton/Red Raider Classic.
