PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Texas Tech women's golf team concluded the first round of the Stanford Pepsi Invitational Friday, shooting a 323 on the day to sit at 15th. The Red Raiders are two strokes ahead of No. 49 Arizona State and four strokes ahead of Big 12 rival Texas A&M. UCLA heads into Saturday's second round with a two-stroke lead over Washington and three strokes over California.
The Red Raiders faced some aggressive opponents Friday and will look to find their niche on the golf course in the second round. Sophomore Megan Hull sits in a 16-way tie for 43rd at seven-over-par 79, while junior Jackie Ey shot an 80 on the day to tie with nine players at 59th.
Teammates Sheila Mendez and Kim Kolb both shot a 10-over-par 82 to tie in 73rd place with three other players. Freshman Calais Gardner sits in a three-way tie for 81st at 12-over-par 84.
Competition is fierce in the individual standings as Alena Sharp of New Mexico State University, Courtney Wood of Vanderbilt, Vikki Laing of California and Kelly Froelich of Georgia battle for the No.1 spot. Sharp, Wood, Laing and Froelich lead the field at one-under-par 71.
Second round action will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. off the No. 1 and 10 tees on the par 73, 5,903 yard Stanford Golf Course.
