Men's Tennis Wraps Up Play at Midland Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas - - The Texas Tech men's tennis team concluded play at the Midland Invitational at the Racquet Club in Midland, Texas. Senior Alfonso Perez and freshmen Diederik de Groot and Radek Nijaki competed at the invite for the Red Raiders.
Nijaki and de Groot each finished the tournament with a 2-2 singles record, while the duo went 0-1 in doubles action. Perez went 1-2 in the tournament.
In his first match, Nijaki defeated Pepe Mendoza (TCU), 6-2, 6-0 and then lost in the second round to Diego Acuna (Pepperdine), 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. In the consolation bracket, Nijaki beat Chris Martin (Illinois), 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, and then was defeated by Carter Morris (Stanford), 8-4.
de Groot won his first match by beating Morris (Stanford), 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 and then fell to Toni Gordon (TCU), 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. In consolation play, de Groot beat Ivor Lovrak (Baylor) 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, and lost to Calle Hanson (Pepperdine), 8-6.
Perez was victorious in his first match over the No. 2 seed Michael Calkins (Illinois), 7-5, 2-6, 7-5. He then lost to Roger Gubser (Texas), 7-6, 7-6. Perez was defeated by Morris (Stanford), 6-4, 6-4, in consolation play.
