LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's Kelly Johnson was named Big 12 Player of the week Nov. 3-10. The Big 12 Conference announced Monday. Johnson is the second Red Raider to receive the honor this season, while it marks the first time she has been selected for the accolade during her career.
Johnson, a 5-10 outside hitter, led Tech to its first back-to-back conference wins in 2002 as she racked up 48 kills on 84 attempts with just three errors. The 2001 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year started the week by recording a school record 22 kills in Tech's three-game upset of Kansas. Johnson hit .465 for the match and tallied just two errors. She also tacked on a pair of service aces, nine digs and a solo block, as she accounted for 25.0 points.
The Fort Worth, Texas, native turned in an encore performance as Tech swept Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. Johnson's record of 22 kills in a three-game match didn't last long as she eclipsed her own mark by pounding out 26 kills against the Sooners to hit .610 for the match. Johnson recorded her seventh double-double of the season as she added a team-high 10 digs with two service aces and a block assist for 28.5 points in the win.
Johnson now leads the conference in kills per game (4.86) and points per game (5.47) and is fourth in service aces (0.46) per game. In conference-only matches she leads all players in kills (5.28), points (6.13) and service aces (0.54)
The Red Raiders (10-13, 5-9 Big 12) are back in action on Wednesday as they host Baylor and then travel to Texas for a Saturday matchup against the Longhorns.
