LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team faced a near-impossible challenge as it traveled to Lincoln, Neb., where the Cornhuskers have not lost a game since Nov. 17 of 2001. That streak continued Saturday night as the Red Raiders were swept (30-20, 30-20, 30-25) at the Nebraska Coliseum.
Tech (8-13, 3-9) was held to just .052 hitting in the match led by sophomore Kelly Johnson's 15 kills. Junior Angela Mooney (Lubbock, Texas) was second on the team in kills with nine and hit a team-high .318.
Nebraska (21-1, 13-0) was led by Laura Pilakowski's 12 kills on a .478 hitting night. The Red Raiders held Nebraska to a season-low 31 assists and held the Huskers to just a .248 clip hitting, marking the fifth time this season that NU has been held under a .250 hitting percentage.
Tech held a lead early in game one, 5-3, but could not overcome a .023 hitting percentage in falling, 30-20.
Game two saw the Cornhuskers lead from wire-to-wire as again the Tech offense struggled hitting just .024 for the match and trail, 2-0, at the intermission.
The Red Raiders did not fall quietly in the third game. Tech rallied back from 3-1 deficit to tie the game up at 10-all. Nebraska would extend its lead to four, 16-12, and lead by as many as six, 20-14. With the score 24-17, Tech went on a 5-1 run narrowing the gap to three, 25-22, but could not force a fourth game, falling 30-25.
Tech will return to the United Spirit Arena for a mid-week conference match against the Kansas Jayhawks on Wednesday, Nov. 6, before hitting the road for a Saturday match versus Oklahoma. First-serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
