The Red Raiders of Texas Tech University host the Cougars of the University of Houston on New Year's Day in the United Spirit Arena with a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.
Texas Tech holds down the 25th spot in the latest AP Poll and the 22nd spot in the Coaches' Poll after their 99-89 overtime win over Minnesota in Minneapolis on Saturday. The Raiders scored a remarkable 25 points in the five-minute overtime period. Robert Tomaszek led all scorers with 28 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. For his stellar performance, the Big 12 Conference named Tomaszek as the Big 12 Player of the Week.
This marks the tenth game of the 2002-2003 season for the Red Raiders (8 - 1) and the sixth and final home game of the non-conference season for the Raiders. The team will close out their non-conference season with a visit to San Diego State University with a nationally televised game on Monday, January 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. (CST) and will be the Raiders' first of five "Big Monday" appearances on ESPN.
The New Year's Day game will be the first time the Cougars have visited the United Spirit Arena and their first trip to Lubbock since January 20, 1996, when both teams were members of the Southwest Conference.
Last season, the Raiders defeated the Cougars (71-64) at the Compaq Center in Houston. The Cougars lead the overall series 27 - 25. Texas Tech holds the edge when playing at home (14-8) and when playing at neutral sites (6-0). Houston holds a 19-5 victory margin when playing on their home court.
