LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Texas Tech softball team could not build on the momentum of its second win over #17 Florida State as it dropped the final game of the Troy Cox Classic to the New Mexico State Aggies, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in Las Cruces, N.M.
NMSU (10-17) used the long ball to force a 3-way tie atop the tournament leader board with a 4-2 record.
In the first inning Kelly Rhyne belted a solo shot over the wall in left giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
Tech (8-14) would answer NMSU when Britney Stolle drove in Andrea Joachims in the second.
The stalemate continued for the next four and a half innings as neither team was able to get anything started.
But with one swing of the bat, a two-out two-run blast in the home half of the sixth, the Aggies took a 3-1 lead and Tech's chances of winning the classic outright.
Via run differential the Red Raiders were named tournament champions with Florida State being named runners up.
Along with being named to the All-Tournament team Kristi Robles extended her hitting streak to 10 games, going 2-for-3.
Britney Stolle, Rebecca Eimen and Esmerelda Perez were also named to the All-Tournament team.
Texas Tech will get a rematch with the Aggies next weekend as the two teams are scheduled to play a double header on the opening day of the University of New Mexico Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M.
