Men's Tennis Opens Season With Pair Wins

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team kicked off its 2002 season with a pair of wins on Sunday. The Red Raiders took to the courts at Lubbock Country Club this morning to face the Gents of Centenary. In the afternoon the team faced New Mexico Military Institute at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Red Raiders won the morning match versus Centenary 7-0. Ben Gudzelak (Halifax, England), playing in the number one singles spot, defeated Todd Killen 6-1, 6-0. The tandem of Gudzelak and Richard Crabtree (Hebden Bridge, England) defeated Centenary's top doubles team of Killen and Jimmy Allen. Tech won the second match against New Mexico Military 7-0. Crabtree defeated Simon Donkor in the number one singles match. The number one doubles match saw the team of Gudzelak and Crabtree defeat Simon Donkor and Alex Donkor. Royce Ramey (Richardson, Texas), Tech's top returning player, was given the day off. He will be back in action when the Red Raiders return home to face the Texas Longhorns on March 2nd.
