TEMPE, Ariz. - The Texas Tech softball team fell in the first two games of the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tempe, Ariz. dropping the first game 11-0 to #2 UCLA and falling by a 12-4 count against Mississippi State.
In the first game of the day an eight run first inning against the Bruins set the tone for the afternoon.
UCLA (4-0) batted 12 in the first inning scoring eight runs on seven hits highlighted by a three run homer by the UCLA catcher. They would send six more to bat in the second scoring one unearned run and closed out the scoring with two runs in the third.
Tech's (3-4) lone bright spot in the game came in the second. Sophomore Andrea Joachims led off the inning with a line drive double which was erased when she was called out at second on a fielder's choice. Freshman Lisa Lawler would add a single giving the Red Raiders first and second with two outs, but they were unable to capitalize.
In the second game Tech jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and looked to have forgotten the previous game.
The lead was built as the Red Raiders were able to capitalize on three Bulldog miscues in the first inning.
Freshman Amie Stines carried a perfect game through three and two-thirds inning and after four had only allowed one base-runner.
Mississippi State (2-0) opened the fifth with six consecutive hits and before the dust had settled sent 13 batters to the plate scoring 12 runs earning the 12-4 victory.
Tech will not have time to dwell on the rough start as it has two games against #24 UMass at 9 a.m. and then will square off with tournament host and eighth ranked Arizona State at 3:30.
