
Tech Falls to the Ninth-Ranked Longhorns

San Antonio, Texas - Senior co-captain Royce Ramey (Richardson, Texas) split sets and battled in a close match with UT's Jean Simon before eventually falling, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, as the Texas Tech men's tennis team fell to the ninth-ranked University of Texas Monday afternoon, 4-2.
The match had been rescheduled from March 2 in Lubbock, and was to have been held at the Penick-Allison Center in Austin, Texas, but was moved to an indoor facility at the Thousands Oaks Racquet Club in San Antonio, Texas, due to rainy weather.
Senior co-captain Richard Crabtree (Hadben Bridge, England) posted one of Tech's two wins on the day in the number two singles slot, defeating UT's Rodrigo Echagaray, 6-4, 6-4. Alfonso Perez (Guadalajara, Mexico) also emerged victorious for the Red Raiders, taking the number six singles slot from UT's Roger Gubser 7-5, 7-6. The teams did not contest the doubles matches.
The Red Raiders drop to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play. The Longhorns improved to 15-0 and 2-0 within the Big 12. The 15-0 start is a school record for Texas.
Tech's next match will be held at the McLeod Tennis Center on Sat., March 30, when it hosts Abilene Christian at 10 a.m. and UTSA at 6 p.m. All fans attending Texas Tech men's tennis home matches this season will receive free pizza, with the first 50 fans in attendance receiving a free t-shirt.
