NORMAN, Okla. - The Texas Tech women's golf team shot a 36-hole score of 629 (313, 316) earlier today in the first round of the Susie Maxwell Classic in Norman, Okla. All five Big 12 teams in the tourney sit in the top 10 after round one with tournament host Oklahoma University shooting a two-round total of 586 to take the lead. Baylor University trails 13 strokes behind in second place with Arkansas-Little Rock rounding out the top three teams (610).
Three Red Raiders made a strong showing in the first day of competition with Stephanie Dukes and Megan Hull leading the team. Dukes and Hull each shot a 10-over-par 154 to tie for 18th with six other players while senior Jennifer Newhouse sits in a five-way tie for 29th after shooting a 12-over-par 156 (78, 76).
Teammates Kim Kolb and Jackie Ey both struggled in their first round of play as Kolb shot a 21-over-par 165 (82, 83) to tie for 64th and Ey placed 74th shooting a 25-over-par 169 (86, 83).
In the individual standings, OU's Lisa Meldrum shot a four-under-par 140 (70, 70) to take the lead while BU's Melanie Hagewood and Maria Svensson of Arkansas-Little Rock each shot an even par to tie in second place.
Tech will look to move up the boards tomorrow morning with tee times for the final round of play running between 7:44 - 9:52 a.m. from the first and 10th tees on the par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla.
