Sept. 10, 2002
Lubbock, TX - Texas Tech's 2002-2003 Men's Basketball schedule has been completed. Fresh from a stellar 23-9 campaign in the 2001-2002 season, Coach Knight's second season at the helm will feature Texas Tech in nine nationally televised games, four regional telecasts, and five "Big Monday" contests in their 27 game schedule of non-conference and conference opponents.
The Red Raiders will have two exhibition games, 11 non-conference games, and 16 conference games. The Raiders are on the road for 13 away games and 14 home match-ups in the United Spirit Arena. The exhibition season tips off against EA Sports on November 7 followed by Athlete's First on November 14. The Red Raiders begin their non-conference schedule with a home opener against UNC-Wilmington on November 22 at the United Spirit Arena and conclude the non-conference portion of the season with their first "Big Monday" game on ESPN on January 6 from San Diego State.
In non-conference play, Texas Tech will face opponents from seven different conferences. In addition to the season debut and first-ever contest against the UNC-W Seahawks, new to the Raiders schedule this year are Nicholls State and the University of New Mexico. The Red Raiders tip-off against the Colonels of Nicholls State for the first time since 1997. The Lobos of the University of New Mexico last faced Texas Tech in 1998.
Big 12 Conference play gets underway for the Raiders with an away game on January 11 against the Wildcats of Kansas State University. Three of Tech's "Big Monday" conference contests will be on the road against Oklahoma, Texas, and Oklahoma State. Texas Tech will tip-off against Missouri on ABC at noon on February 9. The Red Raider conference appearance on CBS will feature a home contest against Texas on March 1. Tech's hosting of Kansas on March 3 will be the fifth "Big Monday" appearance for the Red Raiders this season. The regular conference season draws to a close with a March 8 game against Baylor in Waco.
The American Airlines Center in Dallas will host the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament with first round action beginning on Thursday, March 13, and concluding on Sunday, March 16.
