LUBBOCK, Texas - With fifth ranked Nebraska in town Wednesday night the Red Raiders looked to end an 11-game skid against the Huskers. Even down 2-0 in the match Tech fought hard, but Nebraska's size would prevail as NU would complete the three-game sweep of Tech in the Red Raider's conference home opener.
Kelly Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) led Tech (6-5, 1-1 Big 12) with 11 kills on the night as the lone Red Raider with double digit kills.
In game one, Tech jumped out on the Huskers (10-1, 3-0) early building a 5-2 lead. Capitalizing on the largest crown of the season the Red Raiders were able to feed off the fans throughout the match before falling, 30-24. Keeping true to its style of play Tech served aggressively and attacked aggressively, hoping to throw Nebraska out of its game.
Each time Nebraska would go on a run throughout the match, Tech would have an answer. Despite falling in game two, 30-12, the Red Raiders came out of the locker room determined to end the Huskers 20-game win streak.
Although Tech would fall in the third and final game, 30-23, the Red Raiders were in it until the end.
Setting a new All-time career kills record in the match was senior Melissa McGehee who now has 1,090, breaking the previous record of 1,083 set by Brande Brown (1994-97).
Saturday Tech will travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Jayhawks. A second consecutive trip to Kansas will pit the Red Raiders against the Kansas State Wildcats next Wednesday, before retuning home on Sat., Oct. 5, to face the Missouri Tigers at 7 p.m.
