
Kansas Drops Tech Volleyball 3-1

LUBBOCK, Texas - Tech volleyball will head to Texas A&M still searching for its first conference win as they fell 3-1 (30-25, 24-30, 31-33, 25-30) to Kansas today at the United Spirit Arena. Tech (8-7, 0-6) out blocked Kansas 15 to nine and recorded five less errors but could not overcome Kansas runs.
Tech began the game on a 3-0 run, leading the Jayhawks the whole game. At 21-16, Tech went on a 5-0 run but Kansas would answer with its own 5-0 run. Tech stopped the run and secured the win at 30-25.
After holding the Jayhawks to a .044 hitting percentage in game one, Tech allowed the Jayhawks to hit .417 in game two. Kansas took the lead early in the game but Tech regained the lead going on a 6-1 run including a kill by Laura Grote and a service ace by Jessica Watson. Grote tallied 56 assists and had one ace against the Jayhawks. Watson notched a match-high four blocks and three service aces, also a career high. Kansas took back the lead at 20-19 and would hold the lead until the end.
In a match full of big runs, game three was a point for point match going into extra points. Tech began play on a 3-0 run including a service ace by Kelly Johnson. Johnson finished the game with 31 kills, a season high, and 13 digs. With squads tied at 20, Tech took the lead to 26-21 but the Jayhawks creeped in and the teams tied at 30-30. The teams scored on the opposing teams serves but Kansas secured the win at 33-31. It was an explosive offensive match with both teams hitting over .300. Game four Kansas exploded hitting over .400. Tech led Kansas 15-14 and would not regain a lead the rest of the match.
Tech will head to College Station, Texas on Wednesday for a mid-week match up against the Aggies.
