AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Chance Mock hit B.J. Johnson with a 9-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds left, sending No. 6 Texas to a wild 43-40 win over Texas Tech and keeping the Longhorns in the hunt for a BCS bowl.
Mock, who began the season as the starter for Texas (9-2, 6-1 Big 12), relieved Vince Young after Texas Tech (7-4, 4-3) took a 40-35 lead on Taurean Henderson's third touchdown run of the night.
Faced with 86 yards to cover with 1:57 on the clock and no timeouts, Mock ran Texas' two-minute offense to perfection.
His 54-yard pass to Roy Williams got Texas out from deep in its own territory, and he scrambled for a first down. The touchdown came when Mock floated a pass into the corner of the end zone and Johnson made a sliding, over-the-shoulder catch.
The Longhorns' fifth straight win will keep them ranked high in the BCS standings, where they were No. 5 in the latest rankings.
Tech spoiled Texas' BCS hopes with an upset win in Lubbock last year and nearly did it again with 527 yards of total offense.
Henderson ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Tech rallied from a 35-21 deficit, and B.J. Symons passed for 365 yards and three touchdowns, two to Mickey Peters.
Symons, who was 32-of-56 with no interceptions, drove Tech to the Texas 31 with 5 seconds left, but Keith Toogood, who had two extra points blocked, missed wide left on a 48-yard field goal attempt to tie as time expired.
Texas players stormed the field as several Red Raiders tried to console Toogood, who fell to his knees.
The Tech defense, which came in as one of the worst units in the country, stifled Texas for 13 minutes of the fourth quarter. It forced three turnovers by Young, including a sack and fumble on fourth down that set up the Red Raiders' go-ahead drive.
But they had no answer for Mock, who had seen his playing time dwindle with each game this season. Given the chance to be a hero, he went 4-of-5 on the final drive for 74 yards.
Young passed for 213 yards and two touchdowns, to Sloan Thomas and Bo Scaife, and Cedric Benson ran for 142 yards - his third straight game over 100 - and two TDs for the Longhorns.
Williams finished with eight catches for 136 yards.
Henderson ran for 94 yards for Tech. His last TD put Tech up 40-35 with 2:03 to play before Mock led the Longhorns back.
