
Men's Tennis Sweeps ACU

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team swept all of the matches against Abilene Christian University, 7-0. This win improves their overall record to 2-1 for the season.
The Red Raiders were victorious in all six positions in singles. Freshman Diederik de Groot defeated Julien Curatella 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 position while senior Alfonso Perez was victorious over Clayton Morgan 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 position, sophomore Esat Tanik was triumphant over Trent Broach, 6-1, 6-4. Senior Devin Wakeford dominated over Jason Purser in the No. 4 position, 6-0, 6-1 and sophomore Michael Innerebner conquered Sal Taweel 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 6 location, senior John Walker crushed Jason Ray, 6-3, 6-3.
Texas Tech was also able to come out successful in the doubles as they won all three matches. In the No. 1 position, the combination of de Groot and Wakeford were able to overcome Curatella and O'Connor, 9-7. In the No. 2 spot, Tanik and Perez come out on top against Borach and Taweel, 8-4. Jonathan John and Innerebner prevailed over Ray and Puglia, 9-8.
"I was disappointed with the energy in the doubles, but we came out focused," said head coach Tim Siegel. "We beat a good Division II team. We need more energy in doubles to win more this season. This meet helped us get ready for our meet this weekend."
Tech will be traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. to play New Mexico, Feb. 15.
