Lady Raiders Begin Quest for Big 12 Title

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team begins play in the 2003 Big 12 Championships at the Country Club of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., next week. The University of Missouri is the host of this year's tournament, which begins Mon., April 21, and runs through Wed., April 23.
The Lady Raiders enter the event on the heels of receiving its highest national ranking under current head coach Stacey Totman. Tech is ranked 40th in this week's Golfstat.com poll and is one of seven Big 12 teams ranked among the top 40.
Four different teams have won the six previous Big 12 tournaments. Oklahoma State is the only multiple winner. Tech's highest finish in the event is sixth place.
Sophomore Megan Hull (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield) leads the Lady Raiders with a 77.9 stroke average on the season and is followed by sophomore Kim Kolb, who is averaging 78.3 strokes. Sophomore Sheila Mendez (El Paso, Texas/Franklin) and junior Jackie Ey (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) are averaging 78.7 and 78.8 strokes, while freshman Hazel Tan (Sarasota, Fla./Bradenton Academy) is scoring at 82.4 strokes per round. These players represent the five who will compete in Columbia.
The Lady Raiders are coming off of a second-place finish at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla., two weeks ago. Kolb recorded her highest-career finish at the event with a second-place showing, while Hull finished in the eighth spot.
