LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech begins postseason play Monday at the 2003 Big 12 Conference Championships at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. The event is scheduled for 36 holes on Mon., April 28, with the final round teeing off on Tue., April 29.
In a pre-tournament poll of the league's coaches, Texas Tech was picked to finish seventh in the tournament, while Oklahoma State was chosen as the favorite. Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor were picked second through fourth, respectively, while Kansas State and Texas A&M tied in fifth place. Missouri, Kansas and Colorado round out the top 10, while Iowa State and Nebraska are 11th and 12th.
The Red Raiders opened the spring with three impressive outings, including the championship at the UTSA Invitational and a top five finish at the Louisiana Classics. The team struggled, however, in the last two tournaments, finishing 13th at the Cleveland Golf Championships and 17th at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.
Freshman Andrew Dresser (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview) leads the team with a 73.6 stroke average on the season, and has stepped his game up in the spring season with a 72.3 average in five tournaments. In addition to two top 10 finishes in the spring, including a second-place performance at the UTSA Invitational, Dresser won the Lubbock qualifier for the Texas Amateur last week.
Senior Mark Hull (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) is averaging 73.8 strokes on the season and has bettered his mark by 0.3 strokes in the spring. Hull opened the spring season with a career-best 67 in the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate. Senior Brooks Kelly (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) is third on the squad with a 74.0 average, while junior Brad Jacobson (Bryant, S.D./Hamlin) is close behind with a 74.1. Mid-year transfer Erik Stenman (Tampere, Finland) is averaging 74.8 strokes in four tournaments this spring.
