Lubbock, Texas - Texas Tech head volleyball coach Nancy Todd announced the hiring of Doug Babington as assistant coach of the Red Raider volleyball program. Babington comes to Tech after spending the last two years as an assistant at Rice University.
"The main thing that attracted me to this position was Nancy herself," noted Babington. "She is a great person and very well respected within the volleyball community. In hearing other people talk about her, they have nothing but positive things to say. I feel like this program is heading in the right direction, the Big 12 is a great conference and the facilities are wonderful. I think we can be very successful."
Prior to his stint at Rice, Babington spent two seasons as the head coach at Galveston College where he led the Whitecaps to a 59-29 record. After graduating from Tri-State University in Angola, Ind., with a B.S. in physical education (1995), he served as an assistant coach at Houston Baptist University (1996-98).
"[Doug] will be a great asset to the program," stated Todd. "He is a great people-person and a terrific recruiter. We are all excited about his being here and the girls especially. He has been at some great programs and has done an excellent job with the recruiting. We are fortunate to have added him to the staff."
Over the past seven years Babington has worked at several volleyball camps including serving as guest camp director and court coach at Debbie Sokol's volleyball camp, as well as serving as head court coach of the Notre Dame volleyball camp for three years.
The Bridge City, Texas, native will serve as the recruiting coordinator, as well as other assigned coaching duties.
"I feel my strongest asset is recruiting," said Babington. "I feel I can continue to bring in the type of athletes that have made this program successful, I have been involved in volleyball for the past 11 years, through playing in college and coaching, and have had success at each level."
Babington earned his master's degree from in Health and Human Performance form the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2001, and was just recently married to the former Jenni Lewis of Aurora, Colo.
