LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raider golf team continued its impressive spring run, finishing in the top five for the third-straight event, with a second-place standing at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. The University of Oklahoma hosted the event at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course.
Tech sophomore Kim Kolb (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman), posting her highest-career finish in second place, braved below-freezing wind chills at the 5,910-yard, par 72 course to match her career-low three round total of 228 (76-73-79). The second-place standing also marked her first top 10 finish. In addition to Kolb, sophomore Megan Hull (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield) also grabbed a top 10 spot in eighth place with a 234 (80-75-79). Junior Jackie Ey (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) finished in a 16th-place tie with a 239 (81-79-79). Sophomore Sheila Mendez (El Paso, Texas/Franklin) and freshman Hazel Tan (Sarasota, Fla./Bradenton Academy) finished tied in 37th and 42nd places, respectively, with tournament totals of 246 (82-88-76) and 248 (88-79-81).
Tech, which improved 14 spots to No. 45 in the Golfstat.com rankings last week, has improved its tournament finish by a position in each of the last three events, including a fourth-place finish at the Anteater Invitational in Irvine, Calif., and a third-place finish at the highly-competitive UCLA Bruin Classic last week.
Despite finishing 19 strokes ahead of third-place Baylor and Texas A&M in Norman, the Lady Raiders trailed tournament winner and host Oklahoma by 22 strokes in the standings. OU opened the tournament with an 18-stroke advantage following the first round to secure its cushion.
The Lady Raiders will begin postseason play April 21-23 in Columbia, Mo., at the Big 12 Championships.
