
Colonel Leads Red Raiders To Series Sweep Of Wofford

LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior Christian Colonel hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to give Texas Tech a 11-10 win over the Wofford Terriers in the final game of the three-game series on Saturday night at Dan Law Field. The win gives Texas Tech the series sweep as Tech posted 20-9 and 20-10 wins in the first two games.
Wofford (8-38) stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a three-run home run by Blake Timanus that went sailing over the left field wall.
Texas Tech (29-23) put a single run on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Travis McElroy that plated Sean Alexander who led off the inning with a walk.
Wofford pushed its lead to 4-1 in the top of the third as Blake Timanus picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Red Raiders pulled within two in the bottom of the fourth when Cody Fuller laced an RBI single to center field that scored Josh Haney. Haney set up the scoring when he reached on a fielding error by Wofford shortstop Tony Carbone.
The Terriers scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.
After Texas Tech scored two of its in own in the bottom of the fifth, the Red Raiders pounded out five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-6 lead. Josh Haney gave Tech its first lead when he broke open a 6-6 tie with a bases-clearing triple to right-center field.
Wofford wasted no time in tying the score as the Terriers put up three runs in the top of the seventh. Blake Timanus picked up his second home run of the game in the inning as the Terriers picked away at Tech reliever Jeff Karstens for four hits and took advantage of one Tech fielding error.
Junior shortstop Doug Beck gave Tech a 10-9 lead in the bottom half of the inning when he hit a solo home run over the right field wall giving him five on the season.
Wofford tied the game in the eighth when Blake Timanus picked up his sixth RBI of the game with a single through the left side scoring Steve Casey.
Christian Colonel, who finished the series 13-for-16 at the plate with 10 RBI, picked up his third hit of the game in the bottom of the eighth when he laced a double off the left field wall scoring Scooter Jordan from second. The hit gave Texas Tech the 11-10 lead and Jeff Karstens retired the side in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
Jeff Karstens (8-4) earned the win in relief of Steve Gooch as the pitched three innings allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Culley Kline suffered the loss for Wofford as he pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing two earned runs on two hits.
Texas Tech returns to action on Friday as the Red Raiders will take on Oklahoma State in the final regular-season series of 2003. First pitch on Friday night is 7 p.m. at Dan Law Field.
