LUBBOCK, Texas - The NCAA today announced Texas Tech as one of 27 teams selected to play in the 2003 NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan. The event runs May 15-17.
Texas Tech is making its second-straight appearance in the annual postseason tournament. The Red Raiders won in a playoff with San Diego State last year to finish 10th at the West Regional in Albuquerque, N.M., and advance to its first NCAA Championships appearance in 26 years. The top 10 teams from each of the three regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships May 27-30 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
Last year, the Red Raiders made first postseason appearance since 1996, when Tech earned an automatic bid after winning the Southwest Conference Championship.
Despite an up-and-down spring season, the Red Raiders stepped up their game at the Big 12 Championships last week, finishing fifth, the program's highest-ever finish since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996. Freshman Andrew Dresser (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview) has been the bright spot for the squad this year and was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team after posting a 10th-place finish.
Texas drew the region's top seed, followed by TCU, Oklahoma State, North Carolina and defending national champion Minnesota in the top five, respectively. In addition to Tech, Texas and Oklahoma State, six other teams from the Big 12 were selected to the Central Regional - Oklahoma (7), Baylor (12), Texas A&M (20), Kansas (24), Missouri (25) and Kansas State (26). Tech is the 23rd seed.
