
Golf Heads West For Stanford Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas - Off a fresh second-place finish at the NMSU/Give `Em Five Intercollegiate, the Texas Tech women's golf team will return to the action this weekend in Palo Alto, Calif., at the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational. Senior Kim Kolb led the Lady Raider second-place effort with her first career individual title as she topped the field with a 214 three-round score two weeks ago.
Freshman Valerie Tan came in as Tech's second highest finisher with a four-place individual performance. Tan's fourth-place finish stands as a career best for the true freshman. Rounding out the Lady Raiders at the Intercollegiate were senior Megan Hull (tied for 33rd), Marla Troester (tied for 40) and senior Sheila Mendez (tied for 46th).
Representing the Lady Raiders over the weekend will be seniors Megan Hull, Kim Kolb, Sheila Mendez, sophomore Marla Troester and freshman Valerie Tan. Tan leads the team with an even 75 stroke-average, followed by senior Kim Kolb with a 75.88.
Tech will have its worked cut out for them as 15 out of the 18 teams competing are ranked in front of the Lady Raiders. No.2 Washington, No.6 UCLA, No.9 Arizona State and No.10 New Mexico will be the top four swingers this weekend, with five more teams ranked in the top 25. The remaining field consists of No.11 Texas, No.16 Pepperdine, No.20 Stanford, No.24 Tulsa, No.25 Southern California, No.29 Vanderbilt, No.31 Arizona, No.34 Oregon, No.39 Washington State, No.38 UNLV, No.46 Texas Tech, No.48 San Jose State, Oregon State and New Mexico State.
This is the 42nd year of the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate, with the Lady Raiders finishing in 13th last year. Tech's best finish at this event was a 6th-place finish out of 17 teams in 1997. Last year's team title went to Duke, who will not be in attendance this year.
The Lady Raiders are set for a 10:00 a.m. start on Fri., Oct. 15. The Stanford Invitational will consist of three days of competition with 18 holes scheduled for each day of play. The tournament, slated for Oct.15-17 at the Stanford Golf Course (6,168 yards, Par 72) will have results posted after each day of competition at www.gostanford.com.
