Women's Golf Stands In Seventh

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Sheila Mendez shot a 71, to finish in a tie for 12th after the first day of competition at the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational. The Texas Tech women's golf team sits in seventh overall, and will begin play tomorrow in the second round of the invitational at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
Seniors Megan Hull and Kim Kolb fired off first-round 73s to end the day tied for 29th. Freshman Valerie Tan carded a 76, while sophomore Marla Troester rounded out the Lady Raider competitors with a first-day 83. Tan slated a 59th-place finish, followed by Troester in 84th.
No.9 Arizona State leads the field with a first day 282, followed by No.16 Pepperdine (284) and No.2 Washington (284) two strokes behind in a tie for second. Rounding out the top ten are No.6 UCLA (287-fourth), No.31 Arizona (289-fifth), No.39 Washington State (292-sixth), No.46 Tech (293-seventh), No.24 Tulsa (294-eighth), and No.20 Stanford (295) and No.10 New Mexico in a tie for ninth.
The Lady Raiders are set for a 10:00 a.m. start tomorrow to continue play at the three-day event. The Stanford Invitational has two days of competition left with 18 holes scheduled for each day of play. The tournament, slated for Oct.15-17 at the Stanford Golf Course (6,168 yards, Par 72) will have results posted after each day of competition at www.gostanford.com.
