Lubbock, TEXAS - The No.59 Texas Tech women's golf team wrapped up a phenomenal tournament today at the NMSU/Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate at the New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M. Senior Kim Kolb led the charge with a first-place individual finish of her own, with a even-par third-round to wrap up the two-day event.
Kolb finished the tournament with a 214 score, while posting her career-low round of 69 in the second-round en route to her first tournament title. Kolb (73-69-72-214) was followed by freshman Valerie Tan who also accompanied the senior in the top five. With Kolb's first-place finish, the senior joins an elite group of past Tech golfers as one of three to win a tournament during their Tech careers. Tan (73-71-78-222) was able to hold onto a tie for fourth-place finish after ending day-two in second. Tan's fourth-place tie replaces her career-best finish of tied for sixth at the Jeannine McHaney that she set just a week ago. The freshman has in three-consecutive tournaments carded higher finishes, with her best recorded today.
The third-round would prove to be tough for the remaining Red and Black golfers as seniors Megan Hull and Sheila Mendez both posted 80 rounds, while sophomore Marla Troester fired an 81 third-round to conclude play at the New Mexico State Golf Course. Hull (76-77-80-233) finished in a tie for 33rd while Troester's (76-77-81-234)) play earned her a tie for 40th-place finish. Mendez (77-78-80-235) rounded out the five point-scoring Lady Raiders in a tie for 46th.
Competing as individuals for Tech were juniors Hazel Tan and Ashley Slavich. Tan (71-75-83-229), who was threatening to have her first top-five finish after a tied for fourth-place second-round ending, shot a 83 third-round to fall to a tie for 17th. Slavich (83-83-81-247) finished in a 76th-place tie.
Just in front of the Lady Raiders were the No.3 Arizona State Sun Devils (893) stealing away the tournament title with a 299 third round. Tech (902) followed in second; trailed by No.40 Baylor (904), host New Mexico State (918) and Kansas (921) rounding out the top five. With Tech's second-place finish, it marks their highest finish of 2004-05 thus far, while proving they can compete with the best in the nation defeating two teams that were ranked considerably higher than the Red Raiders. Most notably the No.49 ranked Baylor Bears and the No.43 TCU Hornfrogs finished below the Red and Black.
Nebraska (928), Texas-El Paso (929), Arkansas-Little Rock (931), Kansas State (933), and TCU (935) in pulled in the six through 10 positions. North Texas (937), Denver (947), San Diego State (949), Northern Arizona (954), Hawaii (958), Texas A&M Corpus Christi (980), North Dakota (1010) and Western New Mexico (1013) wrap up the rest of the field in 11th through 18th.
Tech will take a week off before teeing off again at the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
