LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech true freshman and punt return specialist Danny Amendola (The Woodland, Texas) was named the SBC/Big 12 Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. Amendola is the second Red Raider this season to be honored as RB Taurean Henderson earned the offensive award following his performance against Kansas.
Amendola tied the second-longest punt return in school history when he returned a Kansas State punt 90 yards for a touchdown in Tech's 35-25 win in Manhattan. The return was his first for a touchdown and first by a true freshman at Tech since NCAA record holder Wes Welker in 2000. It also was the second touchdown for the Red Raiders in a span of two minutes to put Tech ahead 28-10 in the game. The return was the longest by a Big 12 student-athlete since Bobby Newcombe of Nebraska has a 94-yarder against Missouri in 2000.
The Red Raiders return home this weekend for a 1 p.m. CT matchup with Baylor on Sat., Nov. 6, at Jones SBC Stadium. Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchase at local Select-a-Seat outlets, on-line at www.texastech.com or inside the Texas Tech Athletics Ticket Office in the north end of Jones SBC Stadium.
