Troester Fires Tech Into Second Place With Second Round 69

LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore Marla Troester shot a second-round 69, the lowest-round score by an individual thus far in the tournament, to help lead the team one step closer to its first title since 2003. Troester's performance also brings the Texas Tech women's golf team into second place at the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown in Henderson, Nev., which is just six strokes out of first place.
In all, four Lady Raiders are in the top 25 after two rounds, with the remaining competitor inside the top 50.
Overall, freshman Valerie Tan is Tech's top golfer at the tournament, as she stays solid to finish the day in a tie for sixth. Tan opened up play at the Vegas Showdown with a one-over 73, followed by today's outing of 74 to finish at 147,three-over-par after two rounds.
In a tie for 15th is senior Megan Hull, who was leading the field after day one, but dropped down the rankings after shooting a second round 79. Hull opened the tournament with a one-under 71, and finished today's round with a score of 150, eight-over-par.
Closely following Troester (82-69-152) in 21st-place is senior Kim Kolb in a tie for 24th with a two-day score of 151. Kolb fired off an opening round 78 before bouncing back in the second round to tab a 74.Wrapping up the competing Lady Raiders in a tie for 46th, with an 11-over-par effort, is senior Sheila Mendez (77-78-155).
Leading the 16-team field is host UNLV with a two-day score of 988. Tech (994) closely follows the leader in second while No.18 Stanford (599-third), No.3 Washington (600-fourth) and UC-Irvine (603-fifth) round out the top five.
The 54-hole event is set for a 10 a.m. shotgun start tomorrow to begin the third and final round of the three-day event. The Vegas Showdown, which is taking place at the Anthem Country Club (Par 72, 6,194 yards) in Henderson, Nev., will be covered live with up-to-date scoring on Golfstat.com
