Tech Finishes in Fifth Overall

LUBBOCK, Texas - Three Texas Tech women's golfers finish the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in the top 25, with senior Megan Hull and freshman Valerie Tan leading the way with a tie for 20th-place. Tech (893) finished in fifth-place overall and just three-strokes out of the top three.
Hull opened the tournament with a first-round 71 to end the first-day leading the overall individual leader board. The senior remained consistent throughout the tournament with following rounds of 79 and 74 to finish with a 224 tournament score. Freshman Valerie Tan shot rounds of 73-74-77 to end the contest with a 224, eight-over-par.
Kim Kolb, senior, closed out the Lady Raiders in the top 25 with a tie for 24th-place finish, a 225 nine-over-par outing. Kolb opened the tournament with an 78 before regaining her swing in the remaining rounds to shoot a 74 and 73 to close out competition.
Marla Troester, who led the Red Raiders to a second-place finish after the second day of competition with a 69 second-round score, finished the tournament in a tie for 27th. Troester's first round 82, followed by a third-round 75 complemented the sophomore's career high 69 in the second round. Rounding out the Lady Raiders was Sheila Mendez (77-78-84-239) in a tie for 68th.
Tournament host UNLV took home the team title with an 875 three-round score. No.3 Washington (880), No.25 Stanford (890), UC-Irvine (892) and Tech (893) round out the top five-team finishers.
Taking home individual honors was UNLV's Hwanhee Lee with a 74-71-70-215 effort.
The Las Vegas Showdown concludes the Lady Raiders' fall schedule, which saw Tech finish in the top 10 three times out of five competitions. Two of those finishes were in the top five. The Lady Raiders' best finish thus far in the season came at the NMSU/Give `Em Five Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., where Tech finished second while senior Kolb posted the best individual finish of the season with a first-place finish at the same tournament.
Tech will open up spring play in Parrish, Fla., where it will compete at the Central Regionals Invitational Feb. 21-22.
