LUBBOCK, Texas - Freshman Brandy Moulin hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Texas Tech softball over UTEP 5-4 and sweep the Miners in a doubleheader at Rocky Johnson Field this afternoon.
The Miners (2-2) jumped out on top 2-0 in the second inning as centerfielder Gracie Borjas lead off with a single off Tech starter Julie Hauck (1-2), who pitched a career high nine innings to get her first win of the year. UTEP would add a double before scoring runs on a fielder's choice and a sacrificed fly.
Tech (3-9) would score in the bottom of the third inning when with one out, Natalie Kula bunted for a single and scored two batters later on a single by Natalie Enderlin, who drove in five runs in the two games of the doubleheader. During the play, Kula collided with UTEP catcher Denise Emmons and had to leave the game with a facial laceration.
In the fifth inning, Ashleigh Renfo got Tech started in the frame by singling through the left side with one out. After being moved over on a sacrifice by Britney Stolle, Renfo scored on an error by the shortstop to tie the game a 2-2.
After both teams scored in the sixth inning the game moved on the extra frames. It would be the first time that either team had played an extra-inning game this season and the first in the history of the first year UTEP softball program.
Both teams were able to score a runner, who was placed at second base at the beginning of the inning as part of the international tiebreaker rule, in the eight inning. It was the Lady Raiders who were able to come up big on defense to hold the Miner scoreless in the top of the ninth.
Coming to the bat in the bottom of the inning need a run to win, it was Stolle who out the ball in play and Renfro, who was placed on second to start the inning, who was called safe on a close play at third. Moulin came on to pinch hit for Ashley Parker and plated the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
The Lady Raiders will be back in action this weekend when the travel to Lafayette, La., to take part in the Mardi Gras Classic.
