SAN MARCOS, Texas -
The Texas Tech softball team was once again on the wrong end of the big inning which proved to be the deciding factor in an 11-3 loss to UTSA tonight at the Bobcat Softball Classic in San Marcos, Texas.
The Lady Raiders (0-4) got off to a hot start scoring two runs in the top of the first inning as Ashley Parker led off the game with a bunt single and Ashleigh Renfro followed, reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Junior Kelly Rhyne got Tech on the scoreboard, singling to drive in both Parker and Renfro and give Tech a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning freshman Heather Parker connected on a pitch and drove it well over the wall in left centerfield to extend Tech's lead to 3-0. The homerun was the first career hit for Parker who was playing in just her third collegiate game.
UTSA struck back in the bottom of the second inning when senior Christie Brownly hit the first of two homeruns of the night off Tech starter Kassy Planck. Planck recovered to retire the next three batters but UTSA had cut the lead to 3-1 and swung the momentum in their favor.
The third inning was the difference in the game, as the Lady Raiders again could not avoid allowing the big inning as the hot-hitting Roadrunners broke through to score nine runs on six hits. Tech did not help their cause committing three errors in the inning.
Senior Elyssa Sigala collected two hits and Rhyne chipped in with two RBI to pace the Lady Raiders offensively. The game was called after the completion of five innings of play.
Texas Tech will complete play at the Bobcat Softball Classic tomorrow morning when they take on New Mexico State at 10am.
