LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis suffered another tough loss this weekend falling 4-3 to No. 62 Oklahoma today in Norman, Okla. The 67th-ranked Red Raiders fall to 11-11 overall and 2-5 in the Big 12.
Tech's three points came from the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions. Junior Jakob Paulsen, who is ranked No. 72 in the country, defeated Alexei Ivanov, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1. Junior Esat Tanik was victorious over Marek Velicka, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3, while freshman Dimitrio Martinez beat Lee Gregg, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
The No. 2 doubles team of Paulsen and freshman Bojan Szumanski was the only doubles team to win as the duo defeated Ivanov and Matt Long, 8-3.
"We finished sixth in the Big 12 and were about three points away from finishing third," stated head coach Tim Siegel. "That's just how tough it is to lose 4-3. I think this was the toughest one for us. We were two match points away from winning doubles and that was the difference today. Now we just have to get ready to play Texas in the conference tournament."
The Red Raiders will head back to Norman, Okla., for the Big 12 Championships April 29-May 2.
