LUBBOCK, Texas -
After only two-rounds of play at the eighth annual Big 12 Championships the No. 45-ranked Texas Tech (306-305-611) women's golf team captured a seventh-place finish. The scheduled 54-hole event was shortened after rain caused tournament officials to cancel the championship's third round. Tournament officials announce that all individual and team scores from the second-round will stand as final.
The team's seventh-place finish is its best since finishing sixth in 2000. Texas (292-300) claimed its second overall title with a record setting lowest two-round performance of 592.
Tech finished the shortened championships with three Lady Raiders in the top 25. Senior Jackie Ey (77-73-150) finished as Tech's top golfer, shooting six-over-par, tied for 11th. Tied for 16th is junior Megan Hull (76-76-152), shooting eight-over-par for the tournament. Kim Kolb (78-76-154), junior, carded a 10-over-par total for the tournament and finished in a tie for 25th. Rounding out the last of the Lady Raiders are sophomore Hazel Tan (75-82-157) and Sheila Mendez (78-80-158) who finished in a tie for 36th and 41st, respectively. Tan totaled a 13-over-par outing, while Mendez finished the competition shooting 14-over-par.
Annie Thurman (137) of Oklahoma State took home medallist honors and was the only golfer who shot under par for the tournament.
No. 15 Texas finished in front of host No. 35 Texas A&M (599) in second by a seven-stroke lead. No. 8 Oklahoma State (606) in third, No. 17 Oklahoma (607) in fourth and No. 39 Baylor (608) in fifth, rounded out the top five.
With there still a chance for a NCAA Regional birth the Lady Raider women's golf team has finished the regular season with eight top 10 finishes, five in the top 5. The team's highest finish came at the College of Charleston Invitational, where the ladies finished second in a field of 18.
