LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's tennis standout junior Jakob Paulsen has earned a bid into the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. The championships will take place May 26-31 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla.
The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted following the conclusion of the team championship (May 22-25). Each region receives automatic entry for four singles players and two doubles teams. For a complete list of the competitors, log onto www.ncaasports.com/tennis/men.
Paulsen, a native of Idestrup, Denmark, is Tech's No. 1 singles player posting a 13-10 overall spring record and 5-2 in the Big 12. The 53rd-ranked Paulsen helped the Red Raiders advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 Conference Championship last weekend in Norman, Okla. Earlier this week he was named All-Big 12 in singles and the Big 12 Conference Co-Newcomer of the Year.
"I am really excited for Jakob," said head coach Tim Siegel. "He has had a great year, beating six players in the top 50 in the country. I'm looking forward to getting him ready for the tournament."
Paulsen is just the second player in Tech history to compete in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. Matt Jackson was the Red Raiders' first player to ever compete in the singles draw in 1990. Tech's first-ever appearance in the singles/doubles championships was in 1962 when Southwest Conference champions Daryl Allison and Beau Sutherland competed in doubles. Tech's other appearance in the singles/doubles championships was also in doubles in 1996 by Tyler Jiminez and Dieter Schwedinger, Siegel's first players to make the championships.
