The Texas Tech Red Raiders have the non-conference portion of their 2004 - 2005 men's basketball schedule in place with seven home games, two road games, and two neutral site match-ups.
Beginning in the 2004 - 2005 season, Division I teams are no longer permitted to play exhibition contests against non-collegiate teams. In place of exhibition games, the Raiders will feature two intra-squad contests. Information will be provided on the intra-squad games when details have been finalized.
The Raiders tip-off non-conference play against UNC-Asheville on Friday, November 19, in the United Spirit Arena. This will be the first meeting between the Red Raiders and the Bulldogs.
The next home game will be on Saturday, November 27, against the Gents of Centenary College of Louisiana. Last season the Gents were 16-12 in the Mid-Continent Conference. This match-up marks the first time the teams have met since the 1968 season. Texas Tech holds a 5-0 series lead against Centenary.
The Tech squad will have an away game at TCU on November 23 and will be back on the road to face UTEP on December 4. Last season the Raiders downed the TCU Horned Frogs at the United Spirit Arena by the score of, 67-60. The Raiders also defeated the UTEP Miners, 70-57 in Lubbock.
The SMU Mustangs return to Lubbock on December 1 in a scheduled 7 p.m. tip-off. Last season, the Mustangs topped the Raiders in Moody Coliseum by the score of 62-59. After the SMU loss, the Raiders won their next 12 games.
The Raiders host North Arizona University at the United Spirit Arena on Tuesday, December 7. The Lumberjacks averaged 76.5 points-per-game last season and lost to Eastern Washington in the Big Sky Conference Tournament Championship. The Raiders and the Lumberjacks last met in 1953, when NAU was known as known as Arizona State (Flagstaff).
Texas Tech will host the Ohio State University Buckeyes in Dallas at the American Airlines Center on Thursday, December 16 at 8 p.m. in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Christmas Classic. The game will be televised on ESPN. Last season, the Raiders downed the Buckeyes 80-72 in Columbus.
On December 21, the Iowa Hawkeyes host the Red Raiders at the United Center in Chicago. Tip-off is planned for 6 p.m. The Raiders defeated the Hawkeyes last season in Dallas at the American Airlines Center by six points, 65-59.
The Georgia State Panthers were 20-9 last season and meet the Red Raiders for the first time on Wednesday, December 29. Panther head coach Michael Perry was promoted from associate head coach to head coach on January 3, 2003 when "Lefty" Driesell announced his retirement.
New Year's Day features a new match-up with the Dons of the University of San Francisco. USF returns three starters from a team that finished 17-14 last season.
The final Red Raider non-conference game is on January 4 and is also a new match-up against the Bears of the University of Northern Colorado. The UNC program begins the first season of a four-year reclassification period to Division I. In total, the Bears will play five teams that made the NCAA Tournament a season ago, including Syracuse (23-8), Gonzaga (28-3), Texas Tech (23-11), Utah (24-9), and in-state rival Air Force (22-7).
