Swoopes Wins Gold in Athens

LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech standout Sheryl Swoopes and the U.S. Women's Olympic Basketball Team defeated Australia, 74-63, to win the gold medal of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, today. It marked the third-straight Olympic gold medal for the USA in women's basketball. Tina Thompson (Houston Comets) led the USA with 18 points. The victory today gives the U.S. an Olympic winning streak of 23 games, dating back to the 1992 bronze medal contest. The USA is 42-3 overall in Olympic play and has now won a record five golds, one silver and one bronze medal in the last seven Olympic basketball competitions in which the U.S. has competed.
