Tech Golf Finishes In 14th After Two Rounds

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team wrapped-up the second day of competition at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., in 14th-place. The Lady Raiders moved up one spot from their first-round finish, and will look to compete for its first top ten finish of the year tomorrow in the last day of competition.
Senior Sheila Mendez and freshman Valerie Tan are leading Tech, shooting a 154, eight-over-par after two rounds. Mendez had a rough start in the first-round shooting a 79, but returned to form in the second-round shooting a 75, two-over-par. Tan had the exact opposite situation. After jumping out to a great start in her first tournament as a Lady Raider with a 75,two-over-par first- round, Tan followed it up with a six-over-par 79 performance. Both Lady Raiders stand tied for 45th in the individual leader board.
Senior Kim Kolb is tied for 61st, shooting a 157, 13-over-par. Junior Ashley Slavich and senior Megan Hull round out the last of the point-scoring Lady Raiders. Slavich is tied for 61st along with teammate Hull, carding a 157, six-over-par two-round score. Hull posted a 158, shooting a 12-over-par.
Freshman Marla Troester, who is tied for 19th, is competing as an individual at the Dick McGuire Invitational. After starting out five-over-par after day one, Troester carded a one-under second round to finish at 150, four-over after day two.
The team will continue competition at the UNM Championship Golf Course (Par 73, 6,069 yards) tomorrow with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. and running until 11:00 a.m. Livestats can be found at www.GolfStat.com as well as on the UNM website at www.GoLobos.com.
