LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country squads will be competing in the Cowboy Jamboree on the campus of Oklahoma State this Saturday. The women's squad is coming of an eighth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invite, while the men finished 19th in Minneapolis.
The men will be running an 8K race, starting at 8 a.m., that includes Big 12 rivals Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. There will be 221 competitors in the men's field. The men are looking to Benson Cheserek and Haron Lagat for top performances. Cheserek was the top Tech finisher at the Lobo Invite and Lagat was the top Tech finisher at the Roy Griak Invite.
Entered in the women's 5K, along with Tech's women's squad, are Big 12 opponents Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. There will be 176 competitors in the women's field. The top female finisher for the Red Raiders has been Irene Kimaiyo. Kimaiyo has been the top Tech finisher for the women at the Lobo Invite and the Roy Griak Invite. The women will begin their race at 9:10 a.m.
Completing the Division I fields are in-state rivals Abilene Christian, Sam Houston State, TCU, and the University of Texas at San Antonio.
"This is just as big and important of a race as last week's in Minnesota", said head coach Burke Binning. "The women need to come in with the mentality that they must defend their title from last year, and won't relinquish it to anybody. There will be some stiff competition from Georgetown and Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State is much improved and would probably like to win their home meet this year. The men are coming off a confidence booster, and now get to race the most legendary program in NCAA cross country, Arkansas. I am looking forward to how our front runners react to the team dynamics of the Razorbacks."
