Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raiders will face the Georgia Southern Eagles in the Regional Championship of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches versus Cancer at 7:30 PM tonight at the United Spirit Arena.
The game will be televised on ESPNU. Bill Doleman will call the play-by-play and Reid Gettys will provide the color analysis.
Georgia Southern topped Portland 89-75 to advance to the championship round against Texas Tech. San Jose State will take on Portland at 5:30 PM in the consolation round. ESPNU will also televise the opening game between the Spartans and the Pilots.
In their season opener last night, the Raiders defeated the San Jose State Spartans 88 - 54 as Jay Jackson led all scorers with 19 points. Tech started four returning players (Jay Jackson, Martin Zeno, Darryl Dora, and LucQuente White) and junior college transfer player, Jon Plefka. Five of the seven Raider freshmen (Jeremy Buttell, Terry Martin, Alan Voskuil, Dior Lowhorn, and Michael Prince) played at least six minutes in the game. Five Raiders notched double figures for the game: Zeno 11, Dora 12, Martin 13, Plefka 15, and Jackson 19.
At the conclusion of the post game press conference, Coach Bob Knight announced that Justin Wilkerson would red-shirt this season.
Coach Knight numbers third among all coaches on the all-time career wins list with 855 victories. He is the youngest of the four coaches (Dean Smith-879, Adolph Rupp-876, Bob Knight-854, and Jim Phelan-830) and the only active coach to reach that remarkable plateau of 800 career victories.
Mark Finkner will call the courtside action along with Andy Hipsher as analyst on the Texas Tech Sports Network (KKAM 1340 AM), the flagship station for the Red Raiders.
