
Volleyball Takes on No. 10 Texas in Austin

Lubbock, Texas - In the midst of a six-match draught, the Texas Tech volleyball team will head to Austin, Texas, on Wed., Nov. 16, to face the No. 10 Texas Longhorns, at Gregory Gym. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m.
Last time out, The Kansas Jayhawks proved too much for Red Raider volleyball in Lawrence, Kan., Nov. 12, as they shut out Tech, 3-0. The Red and Black fall to 11-16 and 4-12 in Big 12 action. The Jayhawks secured the match by scores of 30-26, 30-25, 30-22.
Tech and KU were matched in the offensive stat line as the Red Raiders hit .205 (43 kills, 20 errors, 112 attempts) and the Jayhawks hit .218 (47 kills, 21 errors, 119 attempts). The major difference was Kansas' nine service aces to Tech's one. The Red and Black also had to battled back against nine service return errors to the Jayhawks' one.
Philister Sang shouldered the offense with 21 kills and chipped in on defense with 10 digs. The match marks her ninth double-double of the season. Emily Ziegler and Holly Hicks shared the duties at setter. Ziegler led with 22 and Hicks added 14.
In the last meeting between the two teams, the No. 16 Texas Longhorns opened game one with an 8-0 run and never looked back as they topped the Red Raider volleyball team, 3-1, in Lubbock, on Oct. 19. The Orange and White secured the match with game scores of 30-21, 30-24, 25-30 and 30-21.
In game three, the Red Raiders, anchored by the defense that tallied 15 digs and an offense that added 14 kills, held the Longhorns to a .050 hitting percentage as the Orange and White registered 11 hitting errors. The game win also marks the first time Tech has taken a game from Texas since, Nov. 16, 2002 when the Red Raiders fell, 3-1, in Austin. The last time Tech took a game from the Longhorns in Lubbock was Oct. 15, 2001, when the `Horns topped the Red and Black, 3-2.
Brianna Florus shouldered the offense with eight kills and added in one solo block and four block assists. Defensively, Desiree Batista chipped in with eight digs. Jamye Pauley added to the front line with five block assists.
The Longhorns have compiled 20-3 and 14-2 records during the 2005 campaign. They are currently experiencing an eight-match win streak that began with their 3-1 win over Tech on Oct. 19. The Horns are seated at second in the conference and 10th in the AVCA National Poll.
Texas leads the series with the Red and Black, 59-10-2. The Red Raiders are 2-27 in Austin.
