Lady Raiders Come out Swinging in Austin

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No.48 Texas Tech women's golf team currently stands in a tie for third at the Big 12 Championships in Austin. The Lady Raiders, who began the event with a first round 305, currently sit in front of No.14 Missouri and No.38 Texas A&M.
Two Lady Raiders ended the day in the top 10 with senior Kim Kolb (73), tied for fourth, and freshman Valerie Tan (74) posting a tie for seventh leading the Red and Black charge. Kolb, who opened the front nine with two birdies at hole four and five, ended the first part of the course at even-par and the round at one-over-par.
Tan drove into the backend of the course one-under before hitting a tough hole 17 to end the round at two-over-par after carding a tough double-bogey in the back nine.
Rounding out the competing Lady Raiders are senior Megan Hull in a tie for 26th, six-over, and juniors Hazel Tan and Marla Troester in a tie for 42nd carding a eight-over-par performance.
Leading the overall field is No.8 Oklahoma State with a first round 295 followed by Texas (297) in second trailing by two strokes. Sitting in third with Tech is No.29 Baylor (305) and No.58 Nebraska (305). Rounding out the competitive field are No.14 Missouri (306, sixth), No.62 Colorado (306, seventh), No.38 Texas A&M (310, eighth), No.65 Kansas (311,ninth), No.50 Oklahoma (314th, 10th), No.57 Iowa State (317, 11th) and No.79 Kansas State (320) in 12th.
The individual race is led by Colorado's Allison Rella and Oklahoma State's Annie Thurman-Young who are pacing the pack at two-under-par, 70.
The second round of the 2005 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship will get underway at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday with the final round of 18 scheduled for Sunday at 8:00 a.m.
