No. 10 Men's Tennis Heads to Big 12 Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 10 men's tennis team will be traveling to Austin, Texas, for the the Big 12 Tournament on the campus of University of Texas. The tournament begins Fri., April 29 and the championship will be Sun., May 1, at 1 p.m.
The No. 10 Red Raiders are the fourth seed in the tournament and will face the tournament's fifth seed, No. 38 Texas, on Fri., April 29, at 3 p.m. Tech defeated Texas earlier this season, 5-2, on the campus of University of Texas. Tech wrapped up its season last week with two victories on the road over No. 71 Nebraska and No. 59 Colorado. The Red Raiders finished their regular season at 23-2 and 5-2 in conference play. They won every road match this season and reached No. 9 in the rankings, which is the highest in the history of men's tennis at Texas Tech. Radek Nijaki, No. 1 singles player, remains in the rankings at No. 20. Bojan Szumanski plays No. 2 singles for Tech is No. 53 in the latest rankings.
Szumanski was named to the Academic All-Big 12 men's tennis first team with a 4.0 GPA. Also named to the first team was, Sophomore Nijaki and Seniors Michael Innerebner and Jakob Paulsen. Szumanski is majoring in Personal Financial Planning and is a native of Opole, Poland. Innerebner, from Bolzano, Italy, is focusing on Finance, while Nijkaki is double majoring in Excercise Sport Science and Communication Studies and comes to Tech from Zielona-Gora, Poland. Paulsen is also double majoring in Advertising and Marketing and is a native of Idestrup, Denmark. Senior Esat Tanik was named to the second team. Tanik is focused on a double major in Political Science and History. He came to Tech from Izmir, Turkey.
A victory on Thursday will mean a match-up against the tournament's first seed, No. 1 Baylor, in the second round of play. The match is scheduled for Sat., April 30, at 2:30 p.m.
