Cowley Pitches Oklahoma State Past Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas - Oklahoma State's Thomas Cowley allowed just one earned run on three hits in 7 1/3 innings to lead the Cowboys to a 6-4 win over Texas Tech in this Big 12 series opener on Friday night at Dan Law Field.
The loss drops Texas Tech to 20-11 overall and 3-6 in Big 12 play while Oklahoma State improves to 24-11 and 5-5 in league action.
Oklahoma State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as the Cowboys mounted a two-out rally off of Tech starter Adam Lawford. Cowboy left fielder Tye Wright plated the first run with an RBI single and Adam Carr pushed the lead to 3-0 with two-RBI double to left field.
The Red Raiders answered with two runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-run homer by senior shortstop Cameron Blair. Blair's home run scored Cody Fuller who reached on a throwing error by OSU shortstop Chris Gutierrez. The home run was Blair's ninth of the season.
For the next six innings, the game belonged to Cowboy right-hander Thomas Cowley who shutout the Red Raiders and allowed just four base runners during that stretch. Cowley earned his seventh win of the season by pitching 7 1/3 innings allowing one earned run on three hits.
Tech's defensive woes continued as the Red Raiders committed four fielding errors that led to two unearned OSU runs. Tech now has a team fielding percentage of .957 on the season.
Freshman Matt Smith plated two runs for Tech in the bottom of the ninth with a single to center but pinch hitter Chris Williams flew out into a double play to end the Raiders chance at a comeback.
Junior right-hander Adam Lawford (2-4) took the loss for Tech as he allowed three earned runs on six hits and walked four.
Texas Tech and Oklahoma State continue the three-game series on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Dan Law Field.
