Lubbock, Texas - Texas Tech track and field head coach Wes Kittley and senior stand-out Jonathan Johnson have earned awards presented by the United States Track Coaches Association, it was announced on Friday. Kittley was named Mountain Region men's coach of the year and Johnson was awarded the title of Mountain region men's athlete of the year.
Kittley, in his sixth year at the helm of the Tech track program, led the men's squad to its first-ever Big 12 title two weeks ago in Manhattan, Kan. In addition to the team title, the Red Raider men also took home four individual titles in the running events. Kittley is also responsible for coaching Johnson to the first-ever male national title in Tech track history.
Johnson, a native of Abilene, won his fourth-consecutive 800M Big 12 title in Manhattan. Johnson is only the fourth individual to ever four-peat in the history of Big 12 track. Johnson's winning time of 1:44.86 was the third-fastest time by a collegian ever. Johnson also represented the Red Raiders in Athens as Tech's first male Olympian.
Johnson will be competing in the 800M and the 4x400M relay at the NCAA Midwest regional meet this weekend in Norman, Okla. Johnson is looking to secure his second-consecutive national title in the 800M. A top five finish in Norman will automatically send Johnson to the national meet in Sacramento, June 8-11.
