LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Megan Hull shot one of the day's lowest scores of a 73 to lead the No. 48 Texas Tech women's golf team at the 2005 NCAA Central Regional today at The Rawls Course. Hull, who adjusted well to the windy conditions, was able to post the tournaments second-lowest second round score behind two birdies and ended the day tied for third.
Windy conditions of 20 to 30 mile an hour winds posed problems for the 2005 Central Regional 21-team field. Conditions forced many of the individuals in the field to scores of 78 and above. One of the highest single-hole scores reached double digits at a 10, with the individual carding the score at a par 4.
Tech (301-318-619) finished the day with a score of 318 and 14th, with Hull and sophomore Marla Troester the only Lady Raiders to finish below an 80.
"I played hard," said Hull. "I made some good adjustments, battled hard and played to win."
Troester shot a second-round 79 to follow her first-round 75, and will enter the final round in a tie for 42nd and a score of 154.
Head Coach Stacey Totman knows her women might not have adjusted as well as they should have in the windy conditions, but thinks they still have a chance to make a run at the top eight.
"I think we made a lot of mental mistakes," said Totman, "and we didn't make the adjustments that we needed to make. I don't think the wind was that big of a factor, they were just having a hard time with their club selections and their shots."
Hull spent most of the front nine at even or below par as she carded a birdie and two bogeys in the front end of the course. Entering the back end of the 18 hole links, Hull evened herself at hole 12 with one of her two birdies on the day. Within the last three holes Hull posted a bogey at 15 to push the senior one-over for the day. Hull will enter the final round in a tie for third.
"She (Megan Hull) played really well today," said Totman. "She made the adjustments she needed to have in these conditions and did what she needed to do."
Rounding out the Lady Raider competitors are junior Hazel Tan (75-84-159) tied for 78th and seniors Kim Kolb (76-84-160) and Sheila Mendez (82-82-164) tied for 82nd and 93rd, respectively.
"If we play like we are capable of playing we still have a chance to make a run at it," said Totman. "The conditions are not getting any better today so the wind will continue to give problems to the rest of the teams competing."
The Big 12 had another strong day at the course with the top-three schools on the leaderboard reigning from the conference. No. 28 Baylor (302-301-603) is tied for the lead after finishing tied for 15th in the first round. Tied for first, along with the Bears, are No. 37 Texas A&M (293-310-603), No. 15 Missouri (291-312-603) and No. 6 Auburn (294-309-603).
Rounding out the top-eight teams, finishing in the five through eight spots, were No. 35 Purdue (295-309-604), No. 4 Arizona State (296-310-606) and No. 41 Michigan State (300-307-607) and No. 22 Texas (290-317-607) tied for seventh.
Leading the individual field is Texas' Lisa Ferrero (70-73-143) who shot a second-best second round score, and finished two one-under. Auburn's Diana Ramage (68-77-145), who finished the first round in first, slipped to second and to one-over after two rounds. Both leaders sit just in front of Tech's Hull, Arizona State's Alissa Kuczka (72-76-148) and Texas A&M's Christa Spedding (70-78-148) who sits five strokes back from the leader.
The 2005 NCAA Central Regional will get underway tomorrow with 7:30 a.m. tee times set at holes 1 and 10. The final round will decide the NCAA Championship qualifying teams, with all ties being broken with a playoff. The top-eight teams will advance, with the top-two individuals not on the top-eight teams earning a berth to the Championships.
